What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, celebrates the day the Mexican army defeated French troops at the southeastern Mexican city of Puebla. The victory became a rallying cry for the rest of the country, showing the world that they would not stand for invasion from foreign countries.
The celebration has truly evolved over the years. What started as a day of celebration primarily within the Mexican state of Puebla, has gone on to become a very popular holiday throughout much of the United States. Texas, in particular, has embraced the celebration and the importance it represents to Mexican heritage. Cities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area have begun to promote the events they will have during the day – and for some, the entire week. Although many of the celebrations will look quite a bit different this year because of health and safety concerns due to COVID-19, it has not limited the drive and passion many Texans have to celebrate this important day in Mexican history.

The Rustic, located in Uptown Dallas, will be kicking off their Cinco de Mayo celebration at 3:00 PM. The day will be filled with live music, margaritas, and their world-famous Joe Leo Tacos. On May 8th, the Dallas Sport and Social Club will be holding their Cinco de Mayo Volley Fiesta, a one-day volleyball tournament. Located at the Sandbar Cantina, the event will have a live DJ and will feature matches for people of all levels – a great way to spend the day outside and with great company.
The Statler Dallas may be one of the most entertaining places to spend Cinco de Mayo. Their event, starting at 3:00 PM, will be filled with plenty of entertaining events to take part in: a complimentary pig roast, mini-donkey photo-ops, a pop-up taco bar, mariachis, a piñata hitting station, and much more.
The Oak Cliff Coalition for the Arts held their 34th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 1st. Instead of the parade they normally put on, this year’s celebration was virtual. The event began with the Opening Ceremony and the Cultural Expressions Showcase. Then it was followed by performances by various artists and a summary of the history of the Battle of Puebla. A truly inspiring event, the OCCA’s celebration of Mexican heritage was both entertaining and educational.
