A Dallas salon owner faced criminal and civil contempt-of-court charges after deciding to go against orders by opening her salon. Shelley Luther consciously decided to defy a citation, a cease and a desist letter, and a restraining order to reopen her salon on April 24th knowing the possible consequences of her actions. Appearing in front of Judge Eric Moye Monday May 4th, she renounced the opportunity to apologize and pay a $1000 fine.
“I have to disagree with you, sir, when you say that I’m selfish, because feeding my kids is not selfish,” she said. “I have hair stylists that are going hungry because they’d rather feed their kids. So, sir, if you think the law is more important than kids getting fed, then please go ahead with your decision, but I am not going to shut down the salon.”
Moye promptly sentenced Luther to seven days in jail and a $7000 fine.
On April 23rd Luther appeared on Inside Edition stating that she was reopening her salon because she could not pay her mortgage or feed her kids. She also told the reporter that she knew the possible consequences and was willing to face the repercussions. On March 21st, she wrote “I’m not disagreeing with the shutdown, it just hurts” on her Facebook page. She then ripped up a cease-and-desist letter ordering her to close her salon in front of a crowd of protesters, saying “come and get it, Judge Clay Jenkins,” referring to the top county official.
Luther and her boyfriend Tim Georgeff live and own property in Pilot Point, Texas with their three children, six horses, three micro horses, and two miniature donkeys.
“We went from making a lot of money to making nothing,” Georgeff said in The Dallas Morning News.
Did Luther fall “on the sword” for civil disobedience of government overreach, or for celebrity and profit? Her Facebook followers and public followers have raised well over $500,000 on a GoFundMe page for her. Media outlets, including Hannity, Tamron Hall, Inside Edition, and major networks refer to Luther as a hero, civil rights advocate, power horde, “cause” celebrity, selfish citizen, and now jailed criminal.
“The rule of law governs us,” Judge Moye stated regarding Luther’s actions. “People cannot take it upon themselves to determine what they will and will not do.”
