5 Signs of a Scam

Individuals who live in Texas can help prevent crime if they stay active in the community and are aware of their surroundings. To help with the crime situation, many people volunteer in neighborhood watch programs and/or report signs of suspicious activity to authorities. There are five steps you can take that can help with the prevention of criminal activity.

Common Signs Of A Scam

  1. One of the most common schemes used to take advantage of many Texans is the use of unsolicited phone calls and/or Spam emails. With our vast technology growing and getting better every day, it becomes more complex to identify whether a solicitation is from a genuine source. Con artists can create an extremely believable story and may even pretend they are government authority.

  2. When a call is made or an email sent through that claims to represent a well–known or dependable company or states an attractive offer, Texans should not engage in any of the phone calls or emails. Rather than looking into the offer immediately, call the company directly. This simple step ensures the individual that they are actually dealing with is an actual representative that works for a legitimate company.

  3. Another warning sign of a scam is a sweepstake or lottery scam. Texans should not fall for this specific scam that claims that they have won a foreign lottery. Individuals who receive these offers (scams) should delete the email and/or hang up the phone immediately.

  4. If a requirement for money upfront is demanded in exchange for a loan or an award, Texans should consider this as a red flag warning. Texas law states that it is against the law to require payment upfront before funding a loan or paying out a sweepstake prize. If the individual falls prey to this scam, the money that was paid to the loan and/or sweepstakes will be compromised and the criminal will surely disappear with the money.

  5. And lastly, if an individual is wiring money overseas in order to gain a prize, loan, or a large sum of money, should refrain immediately. Con artists take part in this scheme using fake cashier’s checks to avoid felony mail fraud charges. Through these fake checks, the victim’s money is stolen.

Texans can surely take steps to ensure that these scams do not ensnare them and help stop con artists who create scams to steal money. If you have a case contact our firm right away to get started on your case.
