- Another warning sign of a scam is a sweepstake or lottery scam. Texans should not fall for this specific scam that claims that they have won a foreign lottery. Individuals who receive these offers (scams) should delete the email and/or hang up the phone immediately.
- If a requirement for money upfront is demanded in exchange for a loan or an award, Texans should consider this as a red flag warning. Texas law states that it is against the law to require payment upfront before funding a loan or paying out a sweepstake prize. If the individual falls prey to this scam, the money that was paid to the loan and/or sweepstakes will be compromised and the criminal will surely disappear with the money.
- And lastly, if an individual is wiring money overseas in order to gain a prize, loan, or a large sum of money, should refrain immediately. Con artists take part in this scheme using fake cashier’s checks to avoid felony mail fraud charges. Through these fake checks, the victim’s money is stolen.
